Record labels have always been the backbone of the recording industry. Up until the early 2010’s, and for the most part, it was labels that made artists known to the public. If a band was signed to a one of the major labels it would gain much more media exposure, it could get a support slot touring and eventually this band would gain a respectable position within the spectrum of the given genre. With the emergence of the internet, social media, and digitalism all the above changed dramatically but this is a different story all together.

The real treasures of our music, however, have always been hidden in the underground labels. Small bedroom-sized labels run by hard-working individuals on their free time. Usually driven by their love for music, underground labels fund their own releases and support the artists based on criteria other than profit.

Labels, big or small, will continue to exist and will continue to provide a space for artists to express themselves. Maybe they are more like advertising agencies today but still play a major role in the scene. Keep on checking on labels and make sure you look to the underground!
